Container Plants and Flowers

One nice thing about plants and flowers that we grow in containers is we can plant them in almost any type of vessel. Container plants and flowers can be placed on decks, patios, windowsills, balconies, building roof tops; you do not have to have a backyard. There are many more apartment buildings that now have rooftop gardens for those who enjoy growing plants and flowers.

A big plus regarding container gardening is you can move them around to benefit from the sun or the shade whenever they need it. Being able to move your containers around will also prevent lopsided growing. Plants and flowers grown in containers have the advantage of being planted in the proper soil that they need; you do not have to worry about the pH levels of your ground soil. Your containers can be placed on tables, plant stands or whatever you have on hand to bring them to the level that is easier for you maintain them. If and when you decide to move to another place you can take these plants and flowers with you.

To start out with your container needs to large enough for the root ball of your plant plus have extra room to grow. The bottom of the container should have at least 3 holes for drainage. Marbles and large pebbles that are larger than the drainage holes but will still allow water to drain out can be placed in the bottom of the container so you will not lose any soil while draining. The best potting soil should contain perlite or vermiculite, and peat in order to maintain healthy plants and flowers.

Your plants and flowers should be placed in your containers as deep as they were in the original containers. Your containers should be filled with the potting soil to about an inch from top in order to allow for watering. Once you have placed the soil into the containers it might be a good idea to place them in the locations you want them before watering them. Once you have watered your plants and flowers you can mulch the surface of the soil to save the moisture. During hot dry spells you will probably need to water your plants daily. When you water your plants and flowers always use a low pressured stream of water right on the soil itself; if you water from above the plant it will probably get deflected away and not reach the soil. After you have received rain always check to see if the soil in your containers also received rain. If you have to water often you will be washing away the nutrients so you many need to fertilize once a month.

When the seasons change the sun’s position also changes. The containers will probably need to be moved around in order for the plants to receive the sun they need. These container plants and flowers depend completely on you to give them what they need for survival. If the roots of your plants become too restricted it may be time to transplant them to a larger container where they will have room to spread out. It is always best to stay on top of the feeding and watering needs of your plants this way they will stay healthy for a longer period of time.

Container plants and flowers have a tendency dry out faster and will need water more often. The best way to check if your plants need water is by inserting your finger into the soil, water thoroughly if the soil is dry. These containers will probably need extra water during the dry season or when you receive windy weather; also remember to fertilize once a month because of adding extra water.
